Prof. Victor Mougel

After a childhood spent in the beautiful village of Pesmes, Victor studied in Lyon, where he obtained his Bachelor and Master degrees from Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon. He had the chance during that period to discover chemistry in the laboratories of Dr Yann Bretonnière (ENS-Lyon) and Prof. David Parker (Durham University, UK).
He joined Prof. Marinella Mazzanti’s lab in CEA-Grenoble for his PhD in 2009, where he investigated the synthesis, reactivity and magnetic properties of polynuclear uranium complexes. After completing his PhD, awarded by the best PhD thesis prize of the University of Grenoble, he moved to ETH Zürich, Switzerland as a Marie Curie ETH fellow in the group of Prof. Christophe Copéret. There he had the chance to discover the beauty of Surface Organometallic Chemistry and to develop new well-defined alkene metathesis catalysts.
He came back in France in 2016 as a CNRS associate researcher at the College de France in the Laboratory of Chemistry of Biological Processes, and in December 2018 relocated to ETH Zürich as an assistant professor in Inorganic Chemistry. His current research topics are centered on the electrochemical transformation of carbon dioxide and other environmentally relevant small molecules using renewable sources of electricity. He is currently the authors of more than 40 publications with a h index of 22.
In addition, he is actively involved in the establishment of young researchers networks across Europe, being a board member of the European Young Chemists’ Network (EYCN) of EUCheMS and of the Young Network of the French Chemical Society (RJ-SCF).

PhD students

Yuan-Zi obtained his BS from Hefei University, China in 2013 and MSc degree with at University of Science and Technology, Anhui, China. He is now developing the nanomaterial aspects of our research topics.
Interns

Anthony is a Master student from Ecole Polytcehnique in Paris. He is currently warrying out his master internship in the lab working on the design of molecular catalysts for nitrogen reduction.

PhD students

Dilan obtained her BS from Middle East Technical University, Turkey in 2014 and MSc degree within the Erasmus Mundus MAMASELF program carried out at University of Montpellier 2, France and at University of Torino, Italy. Her master thesis work in Torino was devoted to the synthesis of small molecules, ligands and polymers for CO2 reduction. Her PhD work is now centered on the investigation of CO2 reduction activity of single site heterogeneous catalysts on carbon materials.

Sarah Lamaison (2nd year)
After a BS and MSc degree in engineering at Ecole Polytechnique, Sarah got enrolled into the prestigious "Corps of the Bridges, Waters and Forest" (X-Ponts) for national planning of energy and territorial organisation. Afterwards, she carried out a MRes degree in the group of Prof. Erwin Reisner (University of Cambridge, UK) to specialise in the field of "Artificial photosynthesis" before starting a PhD thesis in our group focusing on the developement of bio-inspired electrolytic systems for CO2 reduction.

Ahmed Mouchfiq (2nd year)
Ahmed received BS and MSc from UPMC, Paris, during which he carried out research internships in the group of Prof. Martyn Coles at Victoria University of Wellington, NZ and under the supervision of Dr Richard Villanneau at UPMC. His PhD work is now centered on the synthesis and characterisation of bio-inspired heteropolymetallic clusters for CO2 reduction.
Postdoctoral researchers

Dave received an MChem from the University of Warwick in 2012 with a final year project focussed on electrochemical sensing. In 2016 he recieved a PhD under the supervision of Professor Erwin Reisner at the University of Cambridge. His thesis covered electrochemical and photochemical water-splitting and biomass-reforming catalysis. He now works on bio-inspired hetereogeneous surfaces for the reduction of CO2 and has strong interests in the production of scientific outreach for public information.
